Bare Root Roses are Easy

There are several reasons why people love bare root roses. First, bare root roses are often more affordable than potted roses. Second, they tend to have larger root systems, which allows for better establishment and growth. Third, bare root roses are easier to plant and transplant, as they are lighter and less bulky. Finally, bare root roses offer a wider selection of varieties, as they are easier to ship and store than potted roses. At Certified Nurseries, we make buying bare root roses online easy.

What are bare root roses?

Bare root roses are dormant plants that are sold without soil or a container. Instead, they are sold with their roots exposed, wrapped in a moist material to keep them from drying out. These plants are typically less expensive than potted roses and are commonly sold during the dormant season, which is typically in late winter or early spring. Bare root roses are often preferred by gardeners who want to select their own soil mix and container, or who want to plant their roses directly in the ground. They are also easier to transport and store than potted roses. Get your bare root roses Certified Nurseries.

Why buy bare root roses?

Bare root roses are dormant roses that have been removed from their soil and pruned of all blooms and leaves. The bare root rose is then placed inside a box with the root system wrapped to keep the roots safe during shipment.

Bare root roses do not have blooms, so they do not look as attractive in the store as potted roses. However, when they bloom, they are absolutely exquisite.

Bare root roses do come with many advantages:

  • With all foliage pruned, a bare root rose can more easily conserve its life because its energy isn’t spent supporting its leaves and blooms.
  • Frost damage is a threat to mature roses but not to bare root roses. So, you can plant them much earlier than container roses.
  • Bare root roses are easy to plant because they do not come in a soil filled container.
  • You can plant a bare-root rose early — up to six weeks before (but no more than two weeks after) the last average frost date of the season.
  • Because a bare root rose does not have to divide its energy between caring for its roots and its leaves, it will usually bloom and mature very quickly.

How Do I Care for Bare Root Roses?

Planting

Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Dig a hole that is wide and deep enough to accommodate the roots without crowding. Mix in compost or aged manure with the soil.

Watering

Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on the weather and soil conditions. Avoid getting water on the leaves and flowers.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting time and again in early spring. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates.

Pruning

Prune bare root roses in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches, and cut back the remaining canes to a healthy bud.

Mulching

Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

When is the best time to get my roses ordered?

To ensure you receive your roses early and don’t miss out on our inventory, the best time to order for winter shipments is in early spring or summer.

How does Certified Nurseries ship products?

We wrap your bare root roses carefully and ship them in safe containers. Your shipment will also include rose care instructions.

When can I expect to receive my rose plants?

We send shipments every week beginning in the winter time. We’ll let you know when your roses are on their way so you can estimate when your roses will arrive.
